Did you know….

….About the importance of NSN Numbers and NCAGE codes when you supply to the MOD?

In the US as far back as WW2 it became apparent that problems arose when different military services used different terminology for the same parts. Locating of parts was difficult and sharing of supplies was often impossible, resulting in proliferation of like items in the DoD inventory.

Accordingly the National Stock Number (NSN) system was developed to help both suppliers and buyers by using standardized naming conventions to describe items of supply. The NSN system is now used in all treaty countries including the UK. The NSN is an official label for any item of supply that is repeatedly procured, stocked, stored, issued, and used throughout the US federal supply system. Additionally, pursuant to the NATO Standardization Agreements (STANAGs), the NSN has come to be used in all treaty countries, where it is also known as a NATO Stock Number.

The UK, along with other NATO and sponsored non-NATO countries, uses the NATO Codification System (NCS) to manage cataloguing and assigning of NSNs to new items of supply. The System is based upon the United States Federal Catalogue System.

NCS is structurally based on two NATO Standardisation Agreements (STANAGs): STANAG 3150 (Uniform System of Supply Classification) and STANAG 3151 (Uniform System of Item of Supply Identification). Within the UK, The NCS is implemented by the National Codification Bureau (UK NCB), based in Glasgow. The UK NCB is part of the Ministry of Defence and holds the UK Item of Supply Information System (ISIS). This contains over 5 million NSN records, identifying and describing items of equipment used by the UK armed services.

NATO Commercial And Government Entity (NCAGE) code Suppliers providing equipment, spares, or design control drawings, standards, specifications or a service to the MoD under the NCS system must have a NATO Commercial And Government Entity (NCAGE) code. This is used within their associated NSN Numbers, enabling users of the NCS to determine who manufactures or supplies the Item of Supply.

Each country in the NATO Codification System (NCS) allocates these unique NCAGE five-character codes to companies located in that country, and within the UK they are allocated by the UK National Codification Bureau (NCB). NCAGE codes allocated in the UK begin with U or K, suffixed by three alphanumeric and one numeric character, while other nations within the NCS have different formats - for example the USA has three alphanumeric characters prefixed and suffixed by a numeric character.

NCAGE records are used to hold manufacturer/supplier details such as name, address, postcode, telephone number, fax and company email address.
