The business case for having fun
Stress at work is a ‘major issue’, according to a prominent statement on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website. One HSE report in 1999 estimated that work-related stress cost UK employers an estimated up to £381 million per year, while society at large paid up to £3.8 billion. These are 1995/96 prices, but the issues are just as relevant today.
But it doesn’t have to be like this, as Harlow-based http://www.oraclecomponents.co.uk/ has proved through its years of growth as an independent distributor. CEO John Mustafa commented: ‘Certainly we take our work, and above all our commitment to our customers, very seriously. But there’s no reason why we shouldn’t meet our targets with a sense of fun, teamwork and fulfilment rather than an atmosphere of pressure-driven stress. In fact there are good solid business reasons for doing so’. For example, a happy work atmosphere significantly reduces staff turnover. This not only cuts Oracle’s recruitment and training costs, but it also ensures that customers enjoy an ongoing and stable relationship with account managers who become known to them; an important advantage when complex specifications and extended schedules must be handled without problems for critical projects.
Staff within Oracle’s Harlow head office work in an apparently relaxed environment. Oracle has a Performing Rights Society licence and music is in the air. Team members attend relevant training courses that will improve their productivity. Camaraderie is promoted within the team and by the Oracle Components Football Club, founded in 2007 and a participant in the Hertford & District Football League for the past 2 seasons. Oracle FC won the League finishing 5 points clear of their nearest rivals.
So, a new Account Manager arriving into Oracle’s office will be offered the tools to achieve success without unreasonable stress; training as appropriate, and support from the rest of the team as needed. But what’s expected from him in return? It’s simple to state, and not so hard to do for those dedicated to success for Oracle and for themselves. Be a committed and hardworking member of the team, and be prepared to give as well as use support. Positive team players are the successful ones within Oracle. Yet within the constraints of team membership, and necessary commercial, legal and other considerations, innovation and initiative are also essential. Every customer is different, and quite likely their requirements cannot simply be met off the shelf. With over 5000 suppliers on Oracle’s sourcing list, the answer’s out there somewhere – It’s up to the Account Manager to find it and make it work. It’s a challenge that can be as fun and satisfying as solving any other puzzle. And how does this translate into results for the customer?
To find the answer to this, simply put your next components requirement into Oracle’s online Part Search Toolbar and see for yourself how a motivated team translates into customer service.
